a.Preparatory phase: it is intended forthe holders of the high school diploma (baccalaureate), and lasts two years during which the learner receives a military, a scientific and a maritime training.
Following his success in this phase, the trainee is turned to one of the specialties of the engineering studies.
b.The engineering studies:
Maritime Navigation
The objective of the training is to provide the future officers with the minimal competences required by the STCW. The diplomas and the certificates issued by the Naval Academy with reference to this specialty enable the beneficiary to obtain the patents mentioned below providing the accomplishment of the conditions fixed by the decree 2002-1778 of August 3, 2002:
- Lieutenant of 1st class of the merchant marine;
- Chief mate of the merchant marine;
- Master of 1st class of the merchant marine.
1.Phases of Training:
The training lasts three years and a half; each academic year includes thirty four (34) weeks distributed along two semesters. The training comprises three phases:
- The first phase lasts two years during which the cadet receives an academic training relating to the maritime, scientific and technical fields. Following the success in this phase, the cadet is promoted to the rank of ensign and receives:
1.Diploma of "Officer of the Naval Academy";
2.Diploma of " Lieutenant of 1st class of the merchant marine";
3.Certificate of "basic safety qualification";
4.Certificate of "qualification in the use of the radars and the assistance of automatic pointing radar";
5.Certificate of "aptitude for the exploitation of boats and rescue rafts other than lifeboats";
6.Certificate of "qualification in the advanced techniques of Firefighting";
7.Certificate of qualification in first aid;
8.General certificate of GMDSS operator;
9.Certificate of "qualification in the use of Electronic chart display and information system (ECDIS).
- The second phase lasts one year during which the cadet is sent on detachment to the ministry of transport (Office of the merchant marine and ports). During the period of detachment, the cadet receives a six month-training onboard ships of a gross tonnage of 3000 or more. During this period, the cadet prepares the graduation thesis. The detachment period is sanctioned via "the training book" for the validation of the embarkation period by the scientific board of the Naval Academy.
- The third phase lasts six months during which the cadet continues to receive a vocational training in the specialty. This phase is sanctioned by the debate of the graduation thesis. Following his success in third phase, the cadet is promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade and receives:
1.The National diploma of engineer in «Maritime navigation";
2. Diploma of «Master of 1st class of the merchant marine";
3.Certificate of proficiency in medical care.
2.Types Of Training:
- Basic scientific training: includes the teaching of applied mathematics, applied mechanics, electronics and applied electricity, automatics, data processing and chemistry.
- Technical training: includes the teaching of engineering systems, the naval systems, sea training, a mid-term project, a professional end of studies project with reference to the specialty and the vocational training courses. The vocational training includes sea training and supplementary trainings in the Training Center and Instruction of the Maritime Safety to be in accordance with the STCW requirements.
- General training includes the teaching of the human sciences.
3.Assessment:
The acquisition of competences and knowledge is evaluated by a continuous assessment and a final examination organized during a main session and a remedial session as follows:
- A main session is held each year at the end of every semester for the units which time credit do not exceed thirty (30) hours.
- A remedial session is heldat the beginning of the following academic year, in September, for the first and second years and during the second half of the academic year for the third year.
