Maritime Navigation
The objective of the university training is to provide the future officers with the minimal competences required by STCW. The diplomas and the certificates issued by the Naval Academy concerning this specialty enable the beneficiary to obtain the patents mentioned below providing the accomplishment of the conditions fixed by the decree 2002-1778 of August 3, 2002:
- Lieutenant of 2nd class of the merchant marine;
- master of 2nd class of the merchant marine;
- Second master of 2nd class of the merchant marine.
1.Phases of Training:
The training lasts three years and a half; each academic year includes thirty four (34) weeks distributed along two semesters. The training comprises three phases:
- The first phase lasts two years during which the cadet receives an academic training relating to the maritime, scientific and technical fields. Following the success in this phase, the cadet receives:
- Diploma of "second mate of the merchant marine";
- Certificate of "basic safety qualification";
- Certificate of security awareness training;
- Certificate of "qualification in the use of the radars and the assistance of automatic pointing radar";
- Certificate of "aptitude for the exploitation of boats and rescue rafts and other than lifeboats";
- Certificate of "qualification in the advanced techniques of Firefighting";
- Certificate of qualification in first aid;
- General certificate of GMDSS operator;
- Certificate of "qualification in the use of Electronic chart display and information system (ECDIS).
- The second phase lasts one year during which the cadet is sent on detachment to the ministry of transport (Office of the merchant marine and ports). During the period of detachment, the cadet receives an eight month-training onboard ships of a gross tonnage of 500 or more. This period is sanctioned via "the training book" for the validation of the on board period by the scientific board of the Naval Academy.
- The third phase lasts one year during which the cadet continues to receive an academic training in the specialty. This phase is sanctioned by the debate of the graduation thesis. Following his success in this phase, the cadet officer is promoted to the rank of ensign and receives:
1.Master’s Degree in Maritime navigation;
2.Diploma of Captain of 2nd class of the merchant marine;
3.Certificate of proficiency in medical care.
2.Types Of Training:
- Basic scientific training: includes the teaching of applied mathematics, electronics, data processing and chemistry.
- Technical training:includes the teaching of engineering systems, the naval systems, sea training, a mid-term project, a professional end of studies project with reference to the specialty and the vocational training courses. The professional training courses include sea training and supplementary trainings in the Training Center and Instruction of the Maritime Safety to be in accordance with STCW requirements.
In addition to the onboard training courses during the 2nd phase, mentioned previously, the cadet officer follows during the 1st phase, a vocational training aboard the ships schools during the academic year and aboard merchant ships during the summer. - General training includes the teaching of the human sciences
3.Assessment:
The acquisition of competences and knowledge is evaluated by a continuous assessment and a final examination organized during a main session and a remedial session as follows:
- A main sessionis held each year at the end of every semester for the units which time credit do not exceed thirty (30) hours.
- A remedial sessionis heldat the beginning of the following academic year, in September, for the first and second years and during the second half of the academic year for the fourth year.

- Second engineer 2nd class of the merchant marine;
- Engineer officer 2nd class of the merchant marine.

- The second phase lasts one year during which the cadet is sent on detachment to the ministry of transport (Office of the merchant marine and ports). During the period of detachment, the cadet receives, at least, an eight-month-training onboard ships of a propelling power of 750 KW or more. This period is sanctioned via "the training book" for the validation of the on board period by the scientific board of the Naval Academy.
- The third phase lasts one year during which the cadet continues to receive an academic training in the specialty. Following his success in this phase, the cadet is promoted to the rank of ensign and receives:
1. The Master’s Degree in Energy and Machinery;
2. Diploma of engineer officer 2 2nd class of the merchant marine";
2.Types of Training:
- Basic scientific training: includes the teaching of applied mathematics, applied mechanics, applied electronics and electricity, automatics, data processing and chemistry.
- Technical training: includes the teaching of naval architecture, mechanical systems, electric systems, systems of control and operation of the naval techniques, a research paper, a professional end of studies project with reference to the specialty and the vocational training courses. The professional training courses include sea training and supplementary trainings in the Training Center and Instruction of the Maritime Safety to be in accordance with STCW requirements. In addition to the onboard training courses during the 2nd phase, mentioned previously, the cadet officer follows during the 1st phase, a vocational training aboard the ships schools during the academic year and aboard merchant ships during the summer.
- General training includes the teaching of the human sciences.
3.Assessment:
